[SOLVED] Crackling sound with Ubuntu Netbook Remix

Post by Tobi_2006 »

Hello everyone,

I have Ubunty Jaunty Netbookremix on my NC-10 and have a very annoying problem with the sound. If I plug headphones or loudspeakers in, I get a constant crackling sound that seems to be related to wifi activity (the more data goes over the wireless, the more crackling and hissing), both over the headphones and over the built in speakers. As soon as I pull the plug of the headphones, the sound is gone.

I thought that was a hardware problem until I recently had to boot Windows, as Skype produces long delays from time to time, which can be quite a pain (another problem by the way). No crackling, nothing.

Does anyone know a solution for that problem? The sound is annoying, and I don't have to tell you that using Windows is not an alternative!

Thanks,
Tobi

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Please try the solutions suggested in this thread.
I don't know if any of them work because the user did not report his experience.

Thanks - both for the welcoming and the advise (thought I looked through the whole forum before I posted, but appearently not carefully enough). And of course for running such an excellent website!

I have the same problem as that user, and I agree with him that the headphones are not the problem. I don't have any problems with the same headphones under Windows. My internal microphone ("front mic") is muted under the ALSA mixer, but that does not remove the sound either.

I tried to reconfigure alsa base and to reset alsa-utils, both without any effect on the crackling and hissing.

Any other ideas?

Did you try the new kernel 2.6.31?
It contains newer alsa drivers, which may help with your problem, so it's worth a try.
You can install it with the command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nc10-kernel

That seems to have worked! No crackling, no hissing. Thank you very much - you and your website made me happy after a boring day at work!

Of course I'll come back and annoy you more if the problem comes up again...

I'm glad it worked :)
I add the [solved] tag to the thread, of course feel free to post if the problem reappears ;)
