Hello,

I have a Samsung P560 notebook with Nvidia card (GeForce 9600M GS) running Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS with propriertary Nvidia driver (version 195.36.24) and added the repository. After upgrading kernel (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade) I tried to install the packages
samsung-backlight easy-slow-down-manager and samsung-tools to get backlight keys to work.
Kernel version is
Linux samsung 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
However I get an error when installing easy-slow-down-manager:
Entpacke easy-slow-down-manager (aus .../easy-slow-down-manager_0.13.1~ppa4~loms~lucid_all.deb) ...
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von /var/cache/apt/archives/easy-slow-down-manager_0.13.1~ppa4~loms~lucid_all.deb (--unpack):
Versuche, »/usr/src/easy_slow_down_manager-0.13.1/easy_slow_down_manager.c« zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket easy-slow-down-manager-dkms 0:0.13.1 ist
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
/var/cache/apt/archives/easy-slow-down-manager_0.13.1~ppa4~loms~lucid_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) error if I try to install easy-slow-down-manager:
It seems it has been installed with another package already?
Also the Fn-Cursor up and Fn-Cursor down keys for setting screen brightness do not work, the brightness bar appears on screen but there is no effect in the screen getting darker or brighter...
However all other Fn-Keys are working (eg turn backlight on/off with Fn-F5)
samsung-tools seems to be installed correctly, I can start samsung-tools-preferences and set CPU fan, webcam, etc.
Thanks for any hints...

Edit: Okay, I noticed that I had an old deb installed, after purging, easy-slow-down-manager could be installied, however there is still no functioning brightnes control keys (same status, brightness bar displaying but no effect on screen).

Congrats for all your work on this rep. but unfortunately I cannot install the packages on my samsung nc10 netbook.. I get this message:

W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu-Netbook 10.04 _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100429.4)]/pool/main/g/gcc-4.4/gcc-4.4_4.4.3-4ubuntu5_i386.deb

I tried mounting the ISO image but it doesn't help.

I have done as the howto says, but Synaptic cannot find samsung-scripts! I added the repository in the first link but it cannot find that file. I installed samsung-tools and samsung-backlight. I now have that Samsung Tools program. My FN-keys don't work, but the Tools program seems to work, something like that... I assigned another shortcut to 'CPU Fan' (since my FN-keys don't work yet) and when I use that shortcut it shuts my fan down, put it doesn't go ON again when I use the shortcut again! It tells me the temperature and everything but it doesn't start again. I have to log off to make it start.

The FN-key problem is probably because the samsung-scripts file in the repository. Is it surely there?

Thanks,
Jonas

(Ubuntu 10.04)

Added a new package on the repository, nvidia-bl-dkms, needed to enable backlight support on notebooks/netbooks shipped with nvidia video cards (package taken from the "PPA for Mactel Support").
Main post updated with instructions on how to use it.

Hello,
I have just got a Samsung N148 plus.

I have tried to get the backlight brightness working but it seems to lockup and hang the keyboard.

The steps i used were as follows:

1) Install Ubuntu 10.04.1
2) Added repos as per 1st post and did a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade (kernel did not get updated for some reason)
3) apt-get install samsung-tools samsung-backlight easy_slow_down_manager
4) rebooted - and got backlight error - like hitting the brightness key constantly - keyboard locks up.
5) Went to synaptic and reinstalled linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic as it had a grey ! next to it. this seemed to work as it rebuilt initrd.
6) rebooted and did "uname -a" kernel now looks correct for samsung netbooks.

Code: Select all

Linux smt 2.6.32-25-generic #45~ppa1~loms~lucid-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 27 19:14:15 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

7) Went back to synaptic and reinstalled samsung-tools samsung-backlight easy_slow_down_manager.
8) Hitting Fn+uparrow which is (brightnessup) still locks up keyboard. It's like it hammers the brightness keys continuously.

Output of lsmod looks like 2 modules are loaded.

Hi,

got problems with upgrading the kernel too. Having a plus too, the NP220.

After the first apt-get update & upgrade some 30 files were missing because of my bad internet connection (I am using an UMTS-Stick). I did it again and everything went fine, but your customized kernel is still missing. Now, whenever I try to apt-get it, I'll get a connection failed error.

Apt-get wants to give me the one for lucid i386. Perhaps it's the wrong one? Or is there some trouble regarding authentication? Or do I need to remove something manually first? Thanks for any help.

Output of my try to install the kernel:

I was looking for a long time for working wifi drivers for my R522: 02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8192E Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01).

I followed the guide on the first page and only installed the package "Realtek 8192E wireless driver for the latest kernel Samsung netbooks.

The wifi is still not working after a reboot. :(

Have I done something wrong? Is it because I'm running Ubuntu 10.10?

Problem solved. Seemingly the unstable internet connection did trouble the process. What I did now: Reinstalled ubuntu, did steps as shown in post 1 (had to download some files manually and add them to the cache), rebooted. New kernel was still missing, but it was mentionend in the update-manager (as before). Updated again with this tool (and had some luck cause the connection went down several times while downloading the kernel stuff from the ppa), rebooted again, and now everything seems fine so far.

Finally. Thanks for your work, voRia (appreciate it). Happy, happy.

Hello,

When Debian 64bits, my wifi doesn't work or it's very very unstable.
The wifi works correctly with your ubuntu 64bits version?

doesn't make sense on my samsung n150

backlight adjustment keys don't work in lxde and hang the applet in gnome
volume adjustment keys don't work
some other fn keys do work (like touchpad blocking or sleep mode)
backlight switch hangs

and all these bugs occur only when ubuntu is loaded. in grub menu backlight adjustment works fine. setting backlight value through the setpci works fine too.

samsung-backlight and samsung-tools installed
samsung_backlight module loaded
kernel version is
2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
