According to this bug report, support should be added soon in the kernel 2.6.32 shipped with ubuntu.
In any case, if needed I can add it to the kernels I'll provide on the repository, since I already have to rebuild them to add PHC support and the patch to fix the freezing problem on Samsung N130/N140.

Concerning the brightness problem, I'm sorry I have really no idea on how to fix this.

Could you, without being too "technical", please explain whether, for a "simple end-user" as i am one, it will bring real benefits to switch from 9.10 to 10.04 and if it will be an easy or difficult task?
I understand everything is moving fast befeore Aptil 29, but I suppose that the main differences are already known, aren't they?
I mean by my question: now my N510 works quite well, thanks all your efforts with the FN/Fx problems solved, the backlight issues (which ended, at least for the N510 with upgrading to a non-buggy BIOS) and the Samsung Tools.
So have have you any idea of the complexity/risks involved: I have a dual boot WinXP /Ubuntu 9.10, and my HDD has so three partitions, the third being the "Data common" (readable from Ubuntu OS, of from WinXP OS-which I quite never use), not forgetting the swap one, which is the fourth:Will the partitions keep the same extension naming standard.?
What about the WIFI install (at the moment ndiswrapper + WinXP pilot for Realtek 8192E).
I would not like to "restart from scratch" my install for some or all the items on which I (well in fact you..) spent much time to get to work, if it were only to get in the end new grub/splash screen designs, or gain 4 seconds at boottime, or get a new purple screencolor.
Please note this is not at all a criticism about the new Ubuntu release,I am reallysure that the modifications decided for the upgrade have all good reasons (efficiency, reliability, maintenability,having solutions working for the maximum of hardwre configs. and so on...)
I would just like to get an "authorized" advice about the ""energy" needed to switch to 10.04 and have the N510 working as it is with 9.10 ..or better.
Anyway I won't be the first to "wipe the fresh plasters" (that's a french expression).
I do not need at all a quick answer, but as you know Ubuntu so well, and solved so many specific problems raised by users on this forum, I'm pretty sure you can give a very wise advice on that matter, which would help a lot.

Well, the benefits of the switch to the new version are relative to your needs.
The new ubuntu will bring newer software resulting in a lot of bug fixes and enhancements all around the system, as it's always been with any new version in the past.
Now the question is: are you happy with your current system, do you have anything you need?
If the answer is yes, then your best option is probably to stick with the current version.

However, the upgrade process is usually a very easy task. Theorically, if an old ubuntu version works good after some manual tuning, a newer one should work equally good if not better with less manual tuning, since newer software implies a lot of old problems definitely fixed. Also, the new ubuntu 10.04 is a LTS release, ie it will have more support than normal releases. Concerning your wireless concerns, if I'm not wrong the needed module which I provided in the 'samsung-wireless' package for karmic is now included directly in the kernel (I'm not really sure, in any case if needed I'll provide a 'samsung-wireless' package for lucid too). So, don't worry too much about it.

Now It's up to you to consider ups and downs and do your choice.

If you want my personal advice, stick with the current ubuntu until you "feel ready" to do the upgrade. In other words, wait and let the others to "wipe the fresh plasters", then look at their results and consider the upgrade.

Thank you very much for your answer, which is not late at all: I was not even expecting one before the 10.04 official release!
I'm quite happy that the wise opinion of a specialist like you is , for the time being, the same as the opinion of a "beotian" like me.
All the problems I had with the 9.10 release were more or less all related to the Fn keys problems (you solved them) and the brightness issue which was solved with the BIOS update.
For the other things (Nvidia ION driver, WIFI:Realtek8192/ndiswrapper..) although not a specialist, I did not find it was really difficult to have the N510 working, although the amount of time needed was quite greater than installing 9.04 (and it is still 9.04..) on my desktop (although it has two screens..).

Btw, I am still using the first release of Samsung Tools (the one with the hammer), and have not even tried yet to stick to the succeeding modifications you made afterwards.

I'm sorry I have not yet been able to go on with the Launchpad translation to french (following the last changes you made) :I'l try to have a look at it, but, with your new screens, it looks more "technical", and I am not sure to be able to provide acceptable translations for all english texts.

Confirming that this has worked on my N150 to correct the brightness function key problem

I installed the Lucid netbook remix Beta 2 and had no working brightness controls. Added your repository and installed packages, then ran a check via the update manager. Upon getting the kernel update from your repo my brightness controls are now working

Well, it's just a useless key combination: you already get the € symbol with the "Alt Gr" + "E" combination.

No problem as such really, just my observations.
Updated the kernel to 2.6.32-21.33 on Lucid Lynx. Experienced a few complete system freezes when switching networking on/off in network manager applet. Not sure about the cause. Tried to replicate, unsuccessfully.
On the other hand, wifi led now responds to fn+F9 by turning on/off. Either way, powertop still suggests to enable wifi power saving (pressing "W" to enable does not seam to make any difference as the message appears again after a while).

Hi, Samsung R522 (those with an ati HD4650 video) here
In Ubuntu 10.04 all fn keys (including brightness) seems to work fine! (after adding your ppa of course, upgrading packages and installing samsung-backlight and samsung-tools).

But one must add dmi/product_name "R520/R522/R620" to udev rules (keymaps and force-key-releases) - this model 'product_name' string is absent in initial udev rules files.

The only one terrible thing is that brightness setting works only with opensource radeon driver.
And there are no brightness setting with fglrx proprietary driver (and this is very sad 'couse opensource drivers cannot do PowerPlay - and it is very-very useful thing on laptops).

I am going to try to test your packages with previous version of ubuntu (9.10) - if brightness keys will work with fglrx driver.
But my laptop has one of those buggy bioses that doesnt send key release events to OS (all fn keys excluding volume). And I ve read in ubuntu launchpad that only in Ubuntu 10.04 kernel and udev can do force release events. Thats why i am not sure if it will be successful testing or not. Anyway I'll try and post the results here.

And of course, thank you, VoRia! You do very great things that make available using linux on samsung laptops!

Thx, but the FN-Keys doesn't work. I had upgraded (not new installed) lucid, if I do by commandline "samsung-tools -b toggle" the screen freezes, also no response by keyboard.

May be will better, if I ry complete new install of lucid.?

Also, the backlight will turn down to lowest level, if the E252 was wakeup from standby, no matter how get the full brightness back? Only reboot will bring it "back"

I've added your model's dmi to packages for both karmic and lucid on the repository. Anyway, 'samsung-backlight' is useless for you, because it only works with intel video cards, not your case.
Concerning the brightness control, I've no experience with ATI cards so I don't know if I can be of any help. According to what you're saying, the problem belongs to the proprietary driver and if so there is not much we can do but hope for a solution from ATI side.
Anyway, I'll search for more informations. If I find anything, I'll report here.
