Redemption: the samsung-driver patch!

The latest kernel is going to support all samsung note- and netbooks thanks to this patch:

The patch is supposed to end backlight brightness issues and to fix hotkeys for all samsung note- and netbooks. But noone knows when this driver will be available to end users. At least its not in the latest ubuntu mainline natty-rc-kernel afaik.
What about applying the patch to the voria-kernel? Would the «samsung-backlight»-driver be obsolete?
Good or bad idea?
Cheers!
