Another solution for backlight, sleep mode and usb power

Hi guys,

I think i've got a solution which can resolve several problems without edit any files. (Ubuntu 10.10)

So if you have problems with backlight settings, usb power (like usb mouse disconnections every 5 seconds) or issues to wake up your netbook after sleep mode (not hibernate mode), please read this.

I have found a solution on the french ubuntu forums for sleep mode issues. ( http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=422616&p=1 - nicolas06600 - #20)

But i have tested this solution for other problems (backlight) and it works with samsung-tools. Moreover, it seems to fix issues with USB power.

You have to download 2.6.34 Linux Kernel and use it instead of Voria modified Kernel. You can keep Samsung-tools. (Old stable Kernel used with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx)

You have to know that i've undone all the modifications on several files before testing the kernel. (these file modifications : http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 4747#p4747)

So if you want to test 2.6.34 kernel (32 bit), download and install these files in this order :

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 05_all.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 5_i386.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 5_i386.deb

If you have Ubuntu 64 bit : http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... -maverick/ (Take "amd64" (both) and "all" )

You may need to edit grub to make 2.6.34 kernel as your default kernel at computer start.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 ... 20GRUB%202

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
At this line :

Code: Select all

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
replace 0 with the right number (position of 2.6.34 kernel in your Grub start menu.)

Then :

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
and reboot.

If you test this, please report in this topic, thank you ;)

Thanks for the run-through. I used to have Ubuntu for my Business Web Hosting, but ended up switching because of problems with backlight settings. I am going to try it again, since I love the platform, and see if this helps to trouble shoot it. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

You're welcome ;)

but you have to know that i don't need to use an old kernel anymore.

Now, i'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with Voria packages and current kernel and it's pretty allright.

I'm still encountering some issues to wake up my netbook from sleep mode.

And i think that hibernate mode doesn't work properly but i have to run some tests.

I am using Pyppy Linux dpup Exprimo v. 5x15 w/kernel version 2.6.39

Any suggestions as to how might I implement your fixes, please?

Do I need to forward this thread to the Puppy Linux Forum and ask there?

Thanks!

Hi David.

Well, i don't really know Puppy Linux.

So i think it would be better to get some advices from people who uses Puppy and see if theses fixes could match with your system.

In any case, please report here in this thread if you have succeeded or not, it could help others.

Thanks. :)

For people who runs Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, this solution can still help.

Anyway, you have to know that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Desktop version only), 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 are not officially anymore supported by Canonical.

If you're still using one of these, please upgrade to 12.04 LTS which is supported until April 2017.

Since 12.04 LTS, i don't need anymore to downgrade the kernel.

Just follow the official HowTo here : http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1091

About the packages to install, "samsung-tools" and "samsung-laptop" will be enough.

In case of a brightness control issue (FN-Up / FN+Down), this solution worked for me : http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5753#p5753

Greetings :)
