Linux on my Samsung X22?

Post by samsungworkx »

Hi,

thank you for setting up this great forum and all the work that is done in terms of code...

I was wondering if there is a way to get my Samsung X22 FN-Keys working. Right now only FN-F6 (Mute) works and FN <- + FN -> for Volume Control.

When I try to use other FN-Key combinations the system freezes... :(

I tried to follow the instructions for the samsung-scripts carefully...but still no luck.

The most important thing for me are the backlight up-down keys and the display switch...I could manage without all the others.

Thanks so much for your help.
Greetings

I assume you are using Ubuntu... Karmic or Lucid?
Also, please post here the output of these commands:

Code: Select all

lspci -nn

Code: Select all

sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name

Ok, I have fixed packages for both karmic and lucid ready to be uploaded on the repository.
The problem is that I can't upload them, since the repository has reached its 1GB of space limit.

I've filed a request to have more space, I'll upload the packages as soon as I can. ;)

Looking forward to the patch!

Hi Vorione,

thank you so much for your fast reply and coding work. I am looking forward to see what you have done...

By the way...have you heard about another problem with samsung laptops before: When I run my X22 only on battery...there is a quite annoying little beeping sound coming from somewhere inside the laptop (somewhere under the keypad)... This sound disappears as soon as I attach the power cord. Maybe you have a quick idea about that, too?

Thank you so much,
samsungworkx ...hopefully soon

This is the first time I hear of such a problem.
Is there anything relevant in your 'dmesg' when you experience this issue?

Hi again,

sorry for my late answer...

I installed the now updated Samsung Scripts...and the fn-keys on my X22 are finally working! Thanks for your great work. Will the Samsung Scripts also work with the latest Ubuntu 10.04 lts?

I had a look at the other problem as well. To be honest I got no clue from dmesg messages. What I know now is that - as soon as I detach the power cord of my X22 the fan will slow down and this beeping sound will occur. So do you think that this problem might be solved with disabling laptop mode... how will this be done?

Hope for your answer...keep up the great work!

For Lucid I've written a new application called 'Samsung Tools', which replaces the scripts and should work better than them. :)

No, I don't think laptop-mode is to be blamed for that. Anyway, a test does not hurt, so in karmic you can disable it by editing the file '/etc/default/acpi-support' and change the line 'ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE' to false.
Anyway, I'm afraid this can be an hardware problem...
Do you have any other OS installed on the machine (ie windows)? If so, you can check if the beeping sound occurs even with it.

Hi Voria,

I disabled laptop mode - and the beeping sound is now gone! Huge achievement! As you have suggested I tested the behavior of my X22 without power-cord running another OS (Microsoft Windows XP). There everything worked fine.

Do you recommend a change to 10.04 LTS anyway?

By the way, there was a spelling mistake in your last post. (defaul instead of default)

Thanks again for your great support.

Well, good to know it's not an hardware problem. :)

It's all up to you. If you use your laptop for work and everything is set up and working as you need now, then there is no need to rush for the upgrade. On the other hand, the new ubuntu brings fresh and updated software, so it may be worth the update. Personally, I've replaced my karmic installation the same day lucid has been released. :P
